Naple's trash crisis threatens mozzarella

The New York Times published a story yesterday called "Italy’s Trash Crisis Taints Reputation of a Prized Cheese."

Brief synopsis: the Camorra's illegal trash dumping near Naples is leaving carcinogens in the soil that are making their way into mozzarella di bufala, one of the region's prized products.

Here's a link to the story:

Oggi sono....

Oggi sono malinconica. Cupa. Travolta dal dubbio. Bloccata e in trappola.

Scatenata. Libera.

Michelangelo, Vasari, and Their Contemporaries

Last weekend I went to a lovely exhibit at the Morgan Library in New York called "Michelangelo, Vasari, and Their Contemporaries: Drawings from the Uffizi."

The exhibit includes about 80 drawings that normally can be found in Palazzo Vecchio in Florence. Among the drawings are works that come from a room called the Studiolo of Francesco I de' Medici. My aunt, who along with my uncle took me to the exhibit, wanted to know had I ever visited the Studiolo? I was not sure.

I mean, the Palazzo Vecchio, like the Uffizi (and Palazzo Pitti for that matter), is crammed with works (indeed there is a photo of the interior in the exhibit that shows works hung from floor to ceiling). So maybe. Anyone been to the Studiolo?

What I liked about the exhibit was the presence of the Vasari works. Yes, I know Vasari was a prominent artist but I tend to think of him more as the author of "Lives of the Artists."

And of course, anytime you can see works by Michelangelo, don't miss it!

The exhibit notes say the Morgan Library is the only stop of the tour. So if you are looking for a touch of Florence these days, head over to the Morgan. After the exhibit, you can see the Gutenberg Bible, which, do I need to say it, is absolutely fantastic?!

The exhibit runs until April 20. The Morgan Library is located at 225 Madison Avenue at 36th Street.

Godi!

Direzione Parcheggio

"Direzione parcheggio." Vi fa ridere un po'?

Il Palazzo Vecchio

A cute, little version of Palazzo Vecchio in Florence.

E' molto bravo lui, no?

* Hi friends, Ciambellina is having another birthday and she's asking friends, and all those wonderful people who stop by the blog but don't post a message, to leave a little comment. Just for little ol' me on my little old compleanno. (How old I am does not matter!) (I stole this great idea from another blogwriter, Nelli, whose blog Firenze Day and Night appears on the right). Un abbraccio!

Just a little Dante in the morning

E io: "Maestro, che è tanto greve
a lor che lamentar li fa sì forte?."
Rispuose: "Dicerolti molto breve.

Fama di loro il mondo esser non lassa;
misericordia e giustizia li sdegna:

che d'ogne posa mi parea indegna;

e dietro le venìa sì lunga tratta
di gente, ch'i' non averei creduto
che morte tanta n'avesse disfatta.

Poscia ch'io v'ebbi alcun riconosciuto,
vidi e conobbi l'ombra di colui
che fece per viltade il gran rifiuto.

Incontanente intesi e certo fui
a Dio spiacenti e a' nemici sui.

Questi sciaurati, che mai non fur vivi,
erano ignudi e stimolati molto
da mosconi e da vespe ch'eran ivi.

Elle rigavan lor di sangue il volto,
che, mischiato di lagrime, a' lor piedi
da fastidiosi vermi era ricolto.

Dante's Inferno, Canto III, 42 to 66

Here, Dante continues his tour through the Underworld, passing what translator Ciaran Carson calls "so-so souls," the people who were neither saintly nor full of sin.

Scholars say Dante is referring to Pope Clementine (later made saint) when he says, in line 60 "vidi e conobbi l'ombra di colui che fece per viltade il gran rifiuto." ("I saw and recognized the soul of he who because of his cowardly ways issued the great refusal"). According to Carson's notes, Clementine abdicated, paving the way for Pope Boniface VIII, Dante's arch enemy.

We last visited with Dante on Feb. 4.

Godi!

New Slow Food site

Slow Food's new Web site is now live and online.

You can find the new site at www.terramadre.info.

One of the coolest parts of the site is the blog, which, since the organization is worldwide, includes blog posts in various languages.

You guys probably know about the Slow Food movement, which values and promotes native products and methods, and the people who pursue them. Despite the English name (which pokes fun at American fast food) the group has strong roots in Italy, where the event Salone del Gusto is held.

As they put it, the goal is:

That means the production of food all over the world that's good, clean and ethical.

Maybe it's just me, a fanatical reader of the New York Times, but it does really seem like the wonderful Italian obsession with fresh ingredients and native products is spreading (I mention the Times because it has regularly featured articles on regional products. It recently wrote about butter and buttermilk that's made at farms in New York state and elsewhere).

I can tell you the Slow Food chapter in Philadelphia holds lots of interesting dinners at restaurants in the region that are producing original, native food and drink.

Anyway check out the site and buon appetito!
