L'interprete di Mastrogiacomo ucciso

The Taleban announced over the weekend they killed the interpreter of the Italian journalist, Daniele Mastrogiacomo, who had been kidnapped and later released in exchange for Taleban prisoners. But his death is only the first shock.

Poi altro orrore: "L'abbiamo decapitato." Dichiarazioni a cui è seguito un intero pomeriggio di notizie contrastanti, fino alle parole del premier Romano Prodi che in tarda serata ha parlato di "conferme" dell'avvenuto assassinio.

Sono stati i servizi segreti afghani a fare la prima dichiarazione ufficiale, in serata: il portavoce Sayed Ansari ha detto che Adjmal è stato giustiziato nell'interesse di Al Qaeda. "Ancora una volta i talebani hanno dimostrato di voler seguire le orme delle organizzazioni terroristiche," ha detto.

As if this vicenda wasn't already controversial enough. The exchange of prisoners that was part of Mastrogiacomo's release set off heated discussions in Italy as well as the United States, which apparently had a role in the negotiations but still issued an acid statement that one does not negotiate with terrorists.

Add on top that the presence of Italian soldiers in Afghanistan was something most Italians resisted from the get-go, and that the reauthorization of troops there caused the temporary fall of Prodi's government last month.

Bottom line: Italy's role in the War on Terror has brought the country nothing but trouble.
